WOMEN IN STREET (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) EASTERN MOSUL RESIDENT, IMAN KHADER, SAYING: "Under Daesh, the situation was very tragic, especially because education under Daesh was non-existent. We had no right to attend classes, and there were many challenges and limitations placed on us, especially as women, we had to wear a face veil and a full covering and many other things." Most days, when women came into the store, they (Islamic State militants) would drag them out of the market, why? (Militants would say) 'you are not wearing a face veil', or 'your veil is too short, you are not wearing gloves, you are wearing make-up, you are not wearing socks'. All these problems would make women hesitant in buying anything. They would leave the store. Now that we are rid of this cancer, I consider them a cancer, women are free to go out." - Story Text: In the streets of eastern Mosul, women can be seen wearing brightly-coloured clothes without face veils and black coverings imposed by Islamic State militants, after jihadists were expelled from the city by U.S.-backed Iraqi forces.
Under Islamic State's rule, women were required to largely stay at home or wear head-to-toe black coverings if they ventured out.
Iraqi forces declared victory over Islamic State earlier this month after nine months of fighting the militants street-by-street and house-by-house.
Iman Khader, an eastern Mosul resident, told Reuters that women under Islamic State's rule were not allowed to attend universities and had to wear face veils and black coverings. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
