- Story Text: Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi visited the Philippines and said on Tuesday (July 25) that talks on the South China Sea dispute were "on the right track".
Wang met his Filipino counterpart Alan Peter Cayetano for bilateral talks that also covered trade, tourism and investment. His visit comes at a time when Manila is seeking closer ties with Beijing and veering away from its long-time ally United States, a move under President Rodrigo Duterte's foreign policy.
The Philippines, along with several Southeast Asian countries, have competing claims in potentially energy-rich South China Sea in which about $5 trillion of trade passes every year.
The previous Philippine government filed a case in 2013 with the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague on maritime boundaries. Last year, the tribunal invalidated China's claim to sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, but Duterte has put the ruling on the back burner and said he would revisit it later in his term. China declined to recognise the ruling. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
