- Story Text:Armed with nothing but an iron, tulle and sometimes thread, Benjamin Shine is creating what he calls spiritual art.
The British born artist creates anything from portraits to landscapes using a single piece of tulle with the goal to inspire a moment of self-reflection.
Shine, who is on a three month residency in New York, started the technique in 2008 by accident after noticing the light and shade on a piece of fabric he was using to design clothes. Since then the Central St Martins in London graduate learned how to perfect his technique with either an iron or invisible thread to create each piece. Depending on size and complexity, each piece takes roughly 50 to 100 hours to complete.
Over the past ten years, Shine has worked with fashion houses including John Galliano and Givenchy and numerous museums.
Currently Shine has a five piece exhibition titled "Seeing Through The Material" in the windows of New York department store, Bergdorf Goodman. The exhibition will conclude on August 3.
While in New York, Shine will also create works for three to four venues. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
