- Story Text: A nationwide strike by fuel tank operators in Pakistan entered its third day on Wednesday (July 26) leaving many petrol pumps high and dry.
The transporters are protesting the introduction of stringent new safety rules by government regulators after the explosion of an overturned tanker of petrol killed more than 200 people several weeks ago.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) says the regulations regarding the condition of the vehicles are in the public interest as they are intended to safeguard lives, but the All Pakistan Oil Tankers Association (APOTA) is insisting they cannot be implemented at such short notice.
People started buying up fuel later on Monday (July 24) after hearing that negotiations between the APOTA and OGRA were unsuccessful. Many petrol pumps were already facing shortages by Tuesday (July 25), with city residents calling for the government to resolve the problems as soon as possible. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
