- Story Text: Representatives of several Venezuelan opposition parties in Madrid on Friday (July 28) urged Spain's government and other countries to reject new Constituent Assembly elections which will be held on Sunday (July 30), and to pressure the government of President Nicolas Maduro to declare a humanitarian crisis in the country.
Alex Ojeda, a member of the Primero Justicia (Justice First) party, said the new Constituent Assembly is a mechanism to eliminate opposition and current violence in Venezuela could be exacerbated after Sunday's elections.
The government banned protests from Friday to Tuesday, raising the likelihood of more violence in the volatile country.
Earlier on Friday morning, the United Nations said the Venezuelan government must allow peaceful protests and freedom of expression, in an appeal for calm ahead of Sunday's elections. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
