- Story Text: House Republicans, on Friday (July 28), called for a bipartisan solution on healthcare hours after the Senate killed the Republican Party's seven-year effort to repeal Obamacare.
"This is an issue that affects millions, really every American. And I think people here in Washington need to keep their eye on the ball. I don't look at it through a political lens and I really would urge my colleagues to do the same thing," said Rep. Tom MacArthur of New Jersey
Three Republican senators - John McCain, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski - joined Senate Democrats in the dramatic early-morning 51-49 vote rejecting the bill. At a morning briefing, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called the vote a "victorious one for the American people."
The outcome may spell doom for the party's seven-year quest to gut a 2010 law that was Democratic former President Barack Obama's signature domestic policy achievement.
Republicans have long denounced Obamacare - which expanded the Medicaid health insurance for the poor and disabled and created online marketplaces for individuals to obtain coverage - as an intrusion by government on people's healthcare decisions. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
