The soldiers practiced clearing mine fields, and exploding unused ammunition, and clearing 'enemy' positions. On Thursday elite United States (U.S.) army rangers packed up their equipment and left Mogadishu. It was unclear if their departure was part of a general withdrawal, or simply a rotation of troops. The rangers were originally despatched to Mogadishu to track down Somali faction leader Mohamed Farah Aideed and to protect the United Nations (U.N.) forces in the country. U.S. troops have frequently come under attack from pro-Aideed forces in recent months. In a major battle on October 3, they took some of the heaviest U.S. combat casualties in a single incident since the Vietnam war. The departure of the estimated 400 rangers follows the arrival earlier in the week of 5,000 U.S. marines aboard warships based off the Somali coast.
