The Soviet military said there had been no casualties among the 1,200 soldiers who left the eastern town of Jalalabad in tanks and armoured personnel carriers earlier that morning. The convoy, which had to make the eight-hour journey through rebel-held mountains, was inspected in Kabul by Afghan President Najibullah before heading home. The withdrawal of the Soviet Union's estimated 115,000 troops ends eight-and-a-half-years of fighting with anti-government Mujahideen guerrillas. Moscow said the 'limited Soviet contingent' had completed its task and safeguarded the Afghan revolution. However, rockets and bomb attacks on Kabul cast doubt on how long the government can last without Soviet support. Moscow and Kabul issued statements warning other countries against giving aid to the rebels. Source: POOL/SOVIET TELEVISION (TSS)/REUTERS - JAGDISH KAPOOR
