- Story Text: Frustrated Argentine banana growers gave away thousands of kilos of fruit in the capital city's Plaza de Mayo on Wednesday (August 2) in protest of imports they say are threatening their livelihood.
Hundreds stood in queue to receive bags of free fruit and a flyer detailing the concerns of domestic banana growers, who are estimated at 5,000 families, according to the director of the Argentine Agrarian Federation.
According to growers, consumers pay between 15 and 25 Argentine pesos (.85-1.42 USD) per kilo of fruit but growers receive only 1-1.5 pesos (.06-.09 USD) for the same.
Growers are demanding imports be stopped and prices to domestic growers be raised to 5 pesos (.28 USD) per kilo. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
