- Story Text: There's a lot of buzz in the Polish town of Zywiec, where local authorities have set up beehives in public spaces.
A popular park in the city centre was chosen as one of the locations for the project, giving residents a glimpse into the life of the insects.
Olek is only five but has already learnt a bit of biology.
"Bees collect nectar and bring it to the hive. And they mix, mix, until honey comes out. And the queen of bees has the task of looking after the children and is the ruler and she is the biggest one," he said after visiting an apiary in the park.
Olek's mother and other city residents also welcomed the idea of beehives in the city.
Beekeeper Jakub Tomasik said children had shown a lot of interest in the project.
Zywiec Mayor Antoni Szlagor said the project was an effort to save the shrinking bee population and other municipalities should follow suit.
The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation says bees are being driven to extinction by a number of factors, many of them human-related.
This threatens millions of livelihoods and hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of food supplies, the organisation said after completing its first global assessment of pollinators. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
