- Story Text: Fans in Jamaica were disappointed but still full of praise for Usain Bolt after the superstar was surprisingly beat in his final 100-metre sprint Saturday (August 5) at the World Championships in London.
As has become tradition in the Bolt era, hundreds of fans gathered outside in the Half Way Tree area of Kingston to watch Bolt race on large video screens and celebrate their hometown hero.
The loss was an unhappy surprise but didn't deter his fans, including Jamaican Prime Minster Andrew Holness, from celebrating what Bolt has accomplished in his career.
"I think everybody's disappointed, we all wanted to see Usain win in his final race before retiring," Holness said.
"What he has managed to accomplish in his career is superhuman but at the end of the day Usain Bolt is a human being and we love him, we admire all that he has done, he has been a source of inspiration and he ought to be praised and we in Jamaica love Usain Bolt," he added.
After the race some fans weren't ready to believe that Bolt could end his amazing career with a third place finish.
"Today was a slow start and bad end, but it doesn't take away from the great athlete that Usain Bolt is and I don't know if he might think about 'I've got to stay on a little longer so I can reverse what happened today', you never know, but Jamaica loves Usain Bolt, we all love Usain Bolt, the world loves Usain Bolt." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
