Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) kicked off a regional meeting in the Philippines capital on Saturday (August 5).
Ministers of the regional bloc will hold a full day meeting before being joined by their counterparts from around the world in the the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
As this year's rotating ASEAN chair, Manila will host meetings of foreign ministers from 27 countries that include Australia, China, India, Japan, Russia, North and South Korea and the United States. Pyongyang's recent missile tests are expected to take centre stage.
The United States is expected to press ASEAN and other Asian countries to take tougher action against North Korea, such as "drastically" reducing dealings with the already isolated state. Some experts believe ASEAN could seek to play a role as a mediator, since it is an Asian bloc not party to the standoff. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
