South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha arrived in Manila on Saturday (August 5), ahead of a regional meeting that brings together ministers from 27 nations.
At the meeting, she will come face-to-face with her North Korean counterpart. When asked what she would tell North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, Kang said she will urge the North to stop "continuos provocations" and resume talks.
Both South and North Korea are among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Forum (ARF) participants. The foreign ministers and leaders hold annual meetings with ASEAN member countries to discuss issues of mutual interest.
This year's chair, the Philippines, is expected to seek an agreement in Southeast Asia on ways to engage with North Korea following pressure from the United States to isolate Pyongyang over its missile tests. A senior foreign ministry official told Reuters North Korea's expected response at the meeting will be to maintain that its nuclear weapons programme is a self-defence measure. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
