- Story Text: Kosovo continued to swelter on Monday (August 7) as a heat wave nicknamed "Lucifer" brought the highest temperatures in a decade to the small Balkan nation.
The director of one emergency clinic in the capital Pristina said the number of people seeking medical treatment had dramatically increased in 2017, in part because of very high temperatures. The heat has mostly affected elderly people and those suffering from chronic diseases.
Kosovo's Hydrometeorology Institute told Reuters TV that temperatures had peaked at 38.7 degrees Celsius (101.6°F), the highest in a decade. The institute forecast another hot week with a modest drop in temperatures the following week.
Swathes of southern and eastern Europe have been hit by temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) in a heat wave that has fanned forest fires, triggered weather warning alerts and damaged crops. European weather hub Meteoalarm issued its highest grade "red" warnings for 10 countries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
