Australia and the European Union's foreign policy chiefs signed an agreement on Monday (August 7) to enhance cooperation in fields ranging from trade to climate change, as they called for a global commitment to a rules-based order.
Julie Bishop and Federica Mogherini signed the framework agreement on the sidelines of a regional meeting in Manila. Bishop called the signing an important gesture that comes at a time when "the international rules-based order is under strain" amid "voices calling for protectionism and economic nationalism."
Both Australia and the EU are members of the 27-nation ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), which will be meeting later on Monday for talks expected to focus on North Korea's nuclear missile tests, the battle against Islamic militants and issues in the South China Sea. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
