Venezuela's controversial and government-backed Constituent Assembly met on Tuesday (August 8) and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino addressed the group, pledging that the military would protect the interests of the country.
The session came just days after members were sworn in amid widespread international condemnation. Constituent Assembly President Delcy Rodriguez presented Padrino with a document pledging government support of the military.
During his speech, Padrino addressed a weekend attack on the Fort of Paramacay military base. He said young people involved in the incident had been "deceived."
Meanwhile, opposition protesters set up roadblocks throughout Caracas and faced off with police, some covering their faces and some removing their clothes entirely.
Over the past four months, more than 120 people have been killed in protest-related clashes. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
