- Story Text:The Ouwehands Zoo in the central Dutch town of Rhenen celebrated the fourth birthdays of their two giant pandas on Tuesday (August 8), treating them to a three-layered cake of panda goodies.
Male Xing Ya and female Wu Wen were born on August 5 and August 11 respectively, so the zoo decided to bring the date to August 8, the luckiest number in Chinese tradition.
Both pandas arrived in the Netherlands from China in April after 16 years of hard lobbying by Dutch animal lovers and were brought to the zoo where dozens of Chinese companies contributed to the building of their new enclosure, "Pandasia".
Rare, picky in their diet, and reluctant lovers, pandas are in demand from zoos all over the world, and the ceremonial bestowing of a loan panda on favoured countries has become a hallmark of Chinese cultural diplomacy. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
