- Story Text: Communities in Mexico are breathing a sigh of relief on Thursday (August 10) after Hurricane Franklin churned through the country, with no reported casualties but leaving behind it a trail of debris in shanty towns.
Franklin, the first hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic season, has dissipated over Mexico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center has reported. The Mexican government has discontinued all warnings for Franklin, which is located about 20 miles (35 kms) north-northwest of Mexico City with maximum sustained winds now reduced to 30 miles per hour (45 km/h), the Miami-based weather forecaster said.
Locals are now coming out to inspect the damage for themselves, with roofs blown off houses and reports of swollen rivers. Worst affected states include Puebla and Veracruz, but authorities in these regions of the country are hailing preventative measures for avoiding any loss of life. However, some residents living in mountainous communities say no assistance came for them when Franklin touched land in Mexico.
Franklin has now weakened to a tropical storm but heavy rains continue to fall over central Mexico, raising the risk of flash floods and mudslides in the mountainous terrain. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
