- Story Text: Venezuela's newly installed Constituent Assembly received a strong endorsement on Wednesday (August 9) from Cuban President Raul Castro amid heavy international condemnation.
Cuban newscasts and newspapers ran the letter from Castro to President Nicolas Maduro where he celebrated the assembly and called its election "a valuable lesson which makes Venezuela a symbol for our continent."
Castro comments come as Washington imposed more sanctions on eight Venezuelan officials for their role in creating the all-powerful legislative body.
The constituent assembly was installed on Friday and is made up entirely of allies of the ruling Socialist Party and is armed with the power to re-write the constitution. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
