- Story Text: The SPD's candidate for the German chancellorship Martin Schulz told reporters on Friday (August 18) that he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel from the CDU had agreed to restrict their parties' campaign activities as a sign of solidarity with Spain after terrorist attacks in the Spanish region of Catalonia left 13 dead and more than 100 injured.
Schulz said it was important to give a clear signal of unity against terror in spite of political differences. He also expressed sympathy and solidarity with the victims of the attack and their families.
On Thursday (August 17) a white van drove into crowds on Las Ramblas in the city centre of Barcelona, killing 13 and wounding dozens of others. In the town of Cambrils a car rammed into a group of people, injuring six members of the public and a police officer. According to local police the attacks are linked. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
