- Story Text: Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said on Tuesday (August 22) that there was "the new climate, the new positive atmosphere" between Roman Catholic Church and Russian Orthodox Church.
Cardinal Parolin, speaking at a meeting with the head of Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill, said that the meeting in Havana had opened a totally new stage of relations between the churches and gave a new momentum to the ties between them.
Both Patriarch Kirill and Cardinal Parolin noted that the arrival of holy relics of St Nicholas in Russia earlier this year helped to improve the relations.
The Eastern and Western branches of Christianity split apart in 1054. The Pope Francis, leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, is seeking to improve ties, and last year in Cuba held what was the first ever meeting between a Roman Catholic pope and a Russian Orthodox patriarch. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
