- Story Text: A small group of democracy activists gathered outside Hong Kong's high court on Tuesday (August 22) ahead of the latest hearing in a series of cases related to the 2014 "Umbrella Movement" street protests.
In this case, 20 protesters have been charged with contempt of court after violating an injunction to clear the Mong Kok area during the protests three years ago. Several of them have plead guilty and already received sentences ranging from community service to three months imprisonment.
Among those attending court on Tuesday was Lester Shum, the general secretary of Hong Kong's Federation of Students. He could face jail time, and called on activists to "maintain" their "determination."
Jailed democracy activists Joshua Wong and Rafael Wong were also expected to attend Tuesday' hearing. Joshua Wong was jailed for six to eight months last Thursday (August 17) for unlawful assembly in the 2014 protests along with student activists Alex Chow and Nathan Law, a decision that has attracted international attention and sparked widespread criticism of the government and legal system.
A verdict is not expected for another few weeks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
