- Story Text: The Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command Harry Harris sat down for talks with South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha on Tuesday (August 22) in Seoul, amid rising tensions over North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.
The meeting was held at South Korea's Foreign Ministry and comes as the U.S. and South Korea conduct annual joint military drills known as the 'Ulchi Freedom Guardian', which Harris is expected to observe.
The August 21 to 31 exercises involve computer simulations designed to prepare for the unthinkable: war with a nuclear-capable North Korea.
North Korea's rapid progress in developing nuclear weapons and missiles capable of reaching the U.S. mainland has fuelled a surge in regional tension and U.N.-led sanctions appear to have failed to bite deeply enough to change Pyongyang's mind. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
