- Story Text: A Guinea Ministry of Security spokesman said on Wednesday (August 23) 10 people died in a mudslide when a landfill site collapsed on houses in a Conakry neighbourhood on Monday (August 21), revising an initial figure of eight dead.
Rescuers were still on the scene of Tuesday's (August 22) the mudslide a day later, looking for survivors. The source added that up to 10 people were also injured.
The incident occurred in the morning at the Dar Es Salam neighbourhood after an overnight deluge of torrential rain, police and government officials said.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Security, Boubacar Kasse, said nine bodies had been recovered on Tuesday and a tenth victim, a young girl, was found on Wednesday morning.
Shifting rainfall patterns, rampant deforestation and expanding urban populations are increasing the risk of deadly mudslides across west and central Africa, experts have said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
