The European single market and the free circulation of workers does not aim at favouring countries which are promoting lesser workers' rights." KERN AND MACRON DURING NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING: "And therefore, the reform project of the directive we are supporting, and on which we are going to keep discussing on with our colleagues later, and which I will keep discussing on tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, is a project aiming at reducing the length of time posted workers can be used, to limit it to one year, at reinforcing controls and the possibility to control, to develop controls and control cooperation in a bilateral manner, to have a simple principle which is 'for equal work, equal pay", which will prevent from any distortion. And therefore, to have a profound reform of the current system." KERN AND MACRON DURING NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING: "I was surprised to see how, on social matters, on fiscal harmonisation inside Europe, on the necessity of a better co-ordination, of a bigger capacity of investing together, of a Eurozone common budget with a democratic control and a Eurozone parliament, on the subject of democratic vitality in the next step of European relaunching, there was between us extremely strong common views." - Story Text: French President Emmanuel Macron described European Union labour rules over 'posted workers' as a betrayal of the bloc's fundamental principles on Wednesday (August 23) in Salzburg.
The Europe-enthusiast embarked on a three-day trip to central and eastern Europe mainly to support a reform of the European directive on posted workers, starting by a stop in the Austrian capital.
Macron said the current directive on the matter was a "treason" to the founding principles of the European Union.
The French president also underlined the common views he and Austrian chancellor Christian Kern shared on broader matters such as fiscal harmonisation, a Eurozone budget and a Eurozone parliament. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
