If we are a caring nation that believes in a fair go, when are we going to see some of this fair go and decency from the people like Peter Dutton and his predecessor was no better, Scott Morrison. Where do we keep finding these people? (SOUNDBITE) (English) PROTESTER, SUSAN PRICE SAYING: "Like many others I'm just, you know, really fed up with the government's treatment of refugees and this latest announcement by Peter Dutton to basically starve out, you know desperate, poor people, vulnerable people in our communities to force them back onto Nauru or Manus island or back to danger, you know, is just, it's like, it begs the question: Just how low can our government sink?" - Story Text: Dozens of protesters rallied on Thursday (August 31) in Sydney to oppose Australia's hardline treatment of refugees.
While the CEO of the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Michael Pezzullo gave a speech at the Centre of Independent Studies, outside the building protesters voiced their anger at the government's recent move to cut support for refugees bought from Manus or Nauru to Australia for medical assistance.
Under Australia's tough border security laws, asylum seekers intercepted trying to reach the country by boat are sent for processing at detention camps on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island and the tiny South Pacific island nation of Nauru. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
