Hopes for peace and a better life were the focus of the annual Eid al-Adha prayers in Egypt and Jordan on Friday (September 1).
In Egypt, they prayed for a strong economy. Egyptians have struggled to make ends meet after a series of austerity measures were introduced by the government in the past ten months, a result of floating the pound currency, slicing its value in half.
Subsidy cuts on fuel, electricity and other strategic commodities have driven inflation to record highs, and reduced the average Egyptian's purchasing power.
In Jordan, refugees from Syria and Iraq, forced to flee their war-torn countries, joined in the prayers.
The Jordanian government says the country is home to 1.4 million Syrians, of whom more than 660,000 are registered with the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR.
Eid al-Adha is a holiday celebrated by Muslims around the world marking the willingness of Ibrahim, or Abraham, to sacrifice his son on God's command.
Muslims mark the holiday by slaughtering animals such as sheep and goats. The meat is shared among family and friends and also donated to the poor.
The festival is also being held at the same time as the annual Haj pilgrimage to Mecca is underway in Saudi Arabia. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
