- Story Text: The leader of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Kem Sokha is being held in Correctional Center 3 near the Vietnamese border, local media reported.
On Wednesday (September 6), security forces were noticeably present in front of the prison gate and photographers were told not to take photos of the building. The reports of his incarceration could not be confirmed.
The arrest of Kem Sokha on Sunday (September 3) drew Western condemnation and marked an escalation in a crackdown on critics of Hun Sen, who has ruled for 30 years and could face possibly his toughest electoral challenge from the CNRP next year.
Kem Sokha was formally charged with treason on Tuesday (September 5). His lawyers have dismissed the evidence presented against him so far - a video publicly available since 2013 - in which he tells supporters he is getting support and advice from Americans for the campaign to win elections.
Residents around the prison were reluctant to speak of Kem Sokha but said they would vote for whoever they wanted for the country's next elections. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
