- Story Text: Demonstrations have once again erupted in the streets of Panama City. parents and teachers on Thursday(10 January) joined with students in a protest against the National Guard for its allegedly brutal quelling of an anti-Shah demonstration.
SYNOPSIS: More than a thousand demonstrators were in the streets of Panama City, chanting and carrying banners. Their protest was directed at the Panamanian National Guard. Earlier (3 January) students and guardsmen clashed violently -- and these marchers protested against what they saw as the brutal behaviour of the guardsmen. Parents and teaches were among those who marched and jeered at the guardsmen.
Riot police were out in force, all of them heavily armed. But despite the tension there was little trouble as the crowd shouted slogans against both the National Guard and the former Shah of Iran, in exile in Panama.
But earlier demonstrations were not as peaceful. On one occasion guardsmen charged the students and opened fire with teargas and shotguns. The students fought back with stones.
Hospitals reported that at least 29 people were injured in that demonstration and the incident led the government to close down all primary schools in the country.
