- Story Text: Henry Kissinger, the former American Secretary of State and one of President-elect Ronald Reagan's foreign policy advisors, began talks on Saturday (15 November) with Portuguese leaders. The talks were dominated by the problems of Southern Africa though security in the Middle East was also covered.
SYNOPSIS: Shortly after Dr. Kissinger arrived in Portugal he was greeted at the presidential Palace in Lisbon for discussions with President Antonia Ramalho Eanes.
Dr. Kissinger stressed that his brief visit to European centres was being made on his own initiative and he was not representing Mr. Reagan. there have been indications that Portugal could be an intermediary in Preliminary contacts between South Africa and guerrillas fighting for independence in Namibia. The former Portuguese colony of Angola is backing the guerrillas.
After the meeting, Dr. Kissinger paid tribute to what he called the important role of General Eanes. The Portuguese president has, in the area of foreign policy, concentrated on improving the country's relations with its former African colonies.
Then further talks....this time with the Portuguese Prime Minister, Francisco Sa Carneiro, and Foreign Minister, Freitas Do Amaral. Asked what part Portugal could play in solving the African problems, Dr. Kissinger said Portugal's long experience as a colonial power meant its opinion would always carry weight. But not all the questions centred around Africa. He was asked at a news conference about new Mideast initiatives.
