- Story Text: President Aristides Royo of Panama says he sympathises with student demonstrations against his decision to grant refuge to the deposed Shah of Iran ... but he says the Panamanian Government wanted to bring about a peaceful settlement to the crisis between Iran and the United States. Daily, hundreds of students have staged protest demonstrations against the Shah's presence.
SYNOPSIS: This was the third day of demonstrations in Panama City (December 19). It was to be the worst outbreak of violence in the General American country since the former Shah arrived on Saturday (December 15) to take up residence on the Pacific resort island of Contadora at the invitation of the government.
After two days of confrontations, the police were ready in force for the students who assembled at a college for a march through the streets. There were estimated to be about five hundred students, an unknown number of ordinary police, and about one hundred special riot police. The police used tear gas, the students retaliated by throwing stores and acid bottles.
There were further injuries as some students attempted to release their friends who had been arrested. The number of arrested. The number of arrests during the day was not immediately reported.
One estimate said about twenty-five students suffered cuts and bruises and two were injured by shot-gun pellets. But there has been no confirmation of exact numbers of injuries to demonstrators or police. The police took possession of anti-Shah and anti-United States banners. Parents of the demonstrators gathered in anxious groups outside the college.
The tension in the streets of Panama City reflects the international tension which has developed between the United States and iran over the future of the former Shah.
