SV "NO TO NICE" PEOPLE CHEERING 2.05 5. (SOUNDBITE) (English) JUSTIN BARRETT, OF THE "NO TO NICE" CAMPAIGN, SAYING: The Nice Treaty is dead, it ends today. There's no excuse for carrying on, some of the talk has been suggesting that they will hold another referendum, this is nonsense, this an affront to democracy for them to even suggest it, never mind to actually do it. 2.22 6. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ROGER COLE, CHAIRMAN OF PANA (PEACE AND NEUTRALITY ALLIANCE) CAMPAIGN, ALSO OPPOSED TO THE NICE TREATY BECAUSE OF THE PROPOSED RAPID REACTION FORCE FOR EUROPE, SAYING "It's good, all the other people of Europe, the people, of Finland, Sweden, France, they should be asked as well. The problem with this whole European thing is that they're not asking the ordinary people. Why isn't there a referendum in Sweden, for example? Why shouldn't there be a referendum in Sweden, Denmark? If you are to build a Europe to which people have allegiance, they should be asked in referendums, "Do you support this treaty or don't you." 2.51 7. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER AT CUSTOMS HOUSE PETER GREENE, ANNOUNCING REFERENDUM RESULTS, SAYING "Votes in favour of the proposal 453,461; votes against the proposal 529,478. (SOUNDBITE) (English) IRISH PRIME MINISTER BERTIE AHERN SPEAKING ABOUT HIS DISAPPOINTMENT AT THE REFERENDUM RESULT, SAYING "The government are deeply disappointed by the referendum result on this treaty; we're also disappointed that all of us on the "yes" side, the main political parties, the social partners, were not able to persuade a higher number of voters to participate in making such an important decision. The result will come as an unexpected shock to our partners and to the applicant countries who are due to meet in Gothenburg at the end of next week. They now face potential additional obstacles to the timetable for enlargement. I am convinced nevertheless that the Irish people welcome enlargement. I fully respect the outcome of this referendum; we need to study the lessons from it, they extend beyond Ireland." 4.42 11. MV BACKVIEW AHERN FACING MEDIA 4.47 12. (SOUNDBITE) (English) IRISH PRIME MINISTER BERTIE AHERN SAYING "I'm certain that the vast majority of Irish people remain strongly committed to the European Union, and to enlargement. It's clear there are genuine anxieties and concerns about the future, including about the continued democratic accountability of each member state, which go well beyond the terms of the treaty itself." 5.06 13.
