(SOUNDBITE) (English) SALLY ATKIN, PROSTHETIC TECHNICIAN AT OTTO BOCK, SAYING: "The service that we provide and have done at each Paralympics is to provide a repair and maintenance service for all of the athletes. The scope of that is to provide any necessary and immediate repairs in order for the athletes to compete. Obviously when there is a lot of travelling from all different areas of the world there is a lot of damage done in travel. Different climates, different environments will mean sometimes that there are adjustments that need to be made to limb sockets before the athletes are able to compete." This is when the athletes are settling into the village and they are going through their paces, they are trying out their wheelchairs, they are trying out their orthoses and their prostheses to find out if there is any hiccups so we can iron things out well and truly prior to their competition phase." 11. I had never even heard of it, I never had an idea, never had a clue about peoples' disabilities. I was probably pretty arrogant and thought I knew everything about life but I knew nothing and stepping into the Paralympic movement and the Paralympic family was just the biggest buzz. I never thought I would represent New Zealand or Australia or anyone again, but after coming home in 1980 you have just got to accept it as an equal. We are athletes first and we happen to have a disability and that's how most of us approach our lives. We are people, we are humans and we are unfortunate enough to have a disability and we just get on with our lives." 14.
