SV ULSTER UNIONIST PARTY (UUP) LEADER DAVID TRIMBLE SURROUNDED BY PARTY MEMBERS AND REPORTERS 1.16 5. SCU SOUNDBITE (English) ULSTER UNIONIST PARTY (UUP) LEADER DAVID TRIMBLE: "As you know, we have said since the second of July that there are difficulties that we have with the proposal entitled the 'Way Forward' made by the Prime Minister at Castle buildings. Those difficulties relate to the absence of commitment by various parties, specifically commitment by the IRA and Sinn Fein with regard to carrying out their obligation to de-commission. We know that impressions were given that there had been some change, we were unable to see evidence of it and that became absolutely clear yesterday in the articles written by Mr Gerry Adams in which he made it clear that there was no change in Sinn Fein's position. Secondly the absence of a commitment from the SDLP that they would support the democratic process in that situation. Had there been clearer commitments from them, things would've gone better. I'd hoped right up until the debate in the House of Commons on Tuesday evening that we would see the SDLP making it clear that they would support the democrats in this situation and I regret that at the moment they seem unable to do so. I hope that will change. Then there was the area of certainty, which the Prime Minister very rightly stressed as improtant in his statement. That certainty was to be contained in the Northern Ireland agreement and I very much welcome the fact that yesterday the PM indicated that there going to be amendments to that bill to make it more certain. I haven't yet been able to see the full detail of those amendments but I hope that they will proceed and I hope that the Bill will get better and that consequently the situation will change". 2.59 6. MV CUTAWAY MEDIA 3.03 7. SCU SOUNDBITE (English) TRIMBLE: "We want to see Sinn Fein commit itself to the democratic process and to carry that committment through positively in their actions. And on that basis we would be very happy to proceed." 3.17 LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (JULY 15 1999) (REUTERS-ACCESS ALL) 8. WIDE OF BUSINESS LUNCH, BRITISH PRIME MINISTER TONY BLAIR GOING TO PODIUM TO SPEAK TO CONFERENCE 3.26 9. SV SOUNDBITE (English) BRITISH PRIME MINISTER TONY BLAIR: "If people don't learn how to build trust, to recognise the pain and injustice on the other side as well as their own, to share some responsibility for what has gone before and what must be in the future in Northern Ireland. If people can't do that in Northern Ireland and politics will never take root and there will therefore never be peace." 3.56 10. WS CUTAWAY BLAIR SPEECH 4.03 11. SV SOUNDBITE (English) BLAIR: "You must choose, you the politicians in Northern Ireland must choose the destiny of Northern Ireland. I will help you. And I won't give up, I never give up and I never will give up until the desitny of Northern Ireland is the peace, the real peace that the people there deserve." 4.30 12. WS GUESTS APPLAUDING 4.35 LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (JULY 15 1999) (PARBUL-MUST USE WITHIN 24 HOURS/NO ACCESS UK/NO LIBRARY USE) 13. WS BRITISH HOUSE OF COMMONS SITTING 4.43 14. SV SOUNDBITE (English) MO MOWLAM, NORTHERN IRELAND SECRETARY: "With these parties not nominating ministers it was clear beyond doubt that such an inclusive executive could not be formed. I therefore acted immediately this morning to undo the appointment of ministers designate since the requirement for a cross community executive had not been met. I will now take steps with the Irish government to institute a formal review under the Good Friday agreement." 5.14 BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND UNITED KINGDOM (JULY 15 1999) (SKY- NO ACCESS UK/EURONEWS/CNN) 15. SV SOUNDBITE (English) IAN PAISLEY, DEMOCRATIC UNIONIST PARTY: "I never run away from a battle nor do the unionists that I associate with. We certainly didn't run away from the talks. We told the people if the IRA came in that we would not be there and we left the talks because they were brought in without carrying out the promises that were made to us about de-commissioning. But we were there today." 5.41 16. MV/SV SOUNDBITE (English) GERRY ADAMS, SINN FEIN LEADER: "I want to say that we have had another historic day, a bad day. And as people watch and observe and absorb what has happened here in this building and in other places yesterday and in recent days, there will be a sense of profound disappointment and anger among thinking people. I do have to say well done to Ian Paisley because his are the politics of failure. He revels in failure, he revels in negativity, he revels in division. He revels in tearing down what others seek to put up. So well done Ian." (2 SHOTS) 6.37 Initials Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved
