- Title: BELGIUM: JEAN-MARC BOSMAN GIVES REACTION TO BELGIAN SOCCER UNION'S DECISION TO PAY HIM 16 MILLION FRANCS TO END ITS LEGAL CONFLICT WITH THE FORMER SOCCER PLAYER
- Date: 22nd December 1998
- Summary: LIEGE, BELGIUM (DECEMBER 22, 1998) RTBF, NO ACCESS BELGIUM 1. (SOUNDBITE) (FRENCH) REPORTER ASKS JEAN-MARC BOSMAN QUESTION: "The 22nd December is an historic date for you, has everything been sorted out for you?" (French) 2. (SOUNDBITE) (FRENCH) BOSMAN SAYING: "Yes, everything has been sorted out, and what is positive as well is that we are not fighting anymore. Everyone understood it wouldn't achieve anything to continue fighting. I am very glad that we have reached the final point in this trial, and I think they acted positively as well, its a kind of reconciliation. We needed to reach that point, I have always been asking for mediation but two years ago, the attitude was not the same so I found this very positive." 3. (SOUNDBITE) (FRENCH) REPORTER ASKS JEAN-MARC BOSMAN QUESTION: "Can the amount of money you agreed, be revealed now?) 4. (SOUNDBITE) (FRENCH) JEAN-MARC BOSMAN "Yes, there has been a press release, it has been 16 million francs ($466,700). This amount is not a lot compared to nine years of trial, but this is the cost for everyone's tranquility. On the other side, there will be additional costs from my lawyers, even if they have never asked for a lot of money, there will be some taxes so this is the cost for my tranquility and the cost of being back to normal, so this is very important for me." 5. (SOUNDBITE) (FRENCH) REPORTER ASKS JEAN-MARC BOSMAN QUESTION: "Have you definitely decided to put football behind you? 6. (SOUNDBITE) (FRENCH) JEAN-MARC BOSMAN: "Not entirely. If players show some support I can stay in the world of football by helping the most disadvantaged players, for example, young players who are abandoned by their manager or a player who had a broken leg and his career is finished, I would try to help them with whatever little means but it would be great too if there was some kind of solidarity between players and somehow it would be a solution to still be involved in football." (Reporter asks question: "What are you going to do now exactly? (French) 7. (SOUNDBITE) (FRENCH) JEAN-MARC BOSMAN: "For the moment, I will think. There might be some doors which will open because all this has ended, so I need to sit back and let things settle." LUXEMBOURG (SEPTEMBER 20, 1995) 8.
