- Story Text:About 40,000 couples, some of whom had only just met,
have braved South Korea's winter chill to exchange wedding
vows on Sunday in what the Unification Church billed as the
largest wedding ever.
Over 36,000 couples from 193 countries got married
under Reverend Moon and Mrs.Moon's blessing.
"We are trying to create a global marriage culture,"
said Chris Corcoran, Public Affairs Director of
the Family Federation.
Korean-born evangelist Sun Myung Moon and his wife
blessed the couples at the stadium as 360 million
others watching through satellite and internet link-up.
Moon, wearing a white and gold crown and draped in a
flowing gold-edged white gown, presided over the ceremony with
his wife in a similar dress from the podium above the couples.
A church spokesman said 12,000 couples were newly weds,
who have only just met, joined by 28,000 others renewing their marriage.
"This is going to be an everlasting marriage,
spiritually and eternally forever," said a groom from Hungary.
Moon, a South Korean, found the Unification Church in
Seoul in 1954 with a theology loosely based on Christianity.
His followers, often referred to disparagingly as
"Moonies" say the church's goal is to build a
kingdom of heaven on earth and inspire people to follow the
ideology of self-sacrifice.
The church performed its first mass wedding in 1961 with
33 couples involved. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
