- Story Text: Trump is a favorite cartoon subject, and he will not escape caricature in the Nice carnival this February.
Attracting over a million visitors to Nice every year, the carnival presents a selection of floats and other figurines created by traditional artists. This year's theme is 'King of Space', with displays inspired both by fictional accounts such as those by acclaimed science-fiction writer Jules Verne, and real-life recent events that have made the news, such as the science and education mission to space led by French astronaut Thomas Pesquet.
One of the floats this year will draw on characters who dominate the news, particularly U.S. President Donald Trump and fellow leaders Vladimir Putin, Theresa May and Tayyip Erdogan.
Trump has been constructed with a gorilla's body, with artist Cedric Pignataro saying he aimed to combine the image of Trump portrayed in the press with the typical traditions of carnival design.
There will also be symbols of each leader's respective country, such as Big Ben and the Statue of Liberty, placed on the floats. An astronaut figure will be depicted descending from a rocket after crash-landing, and getting shocked at the state of the planet.
In 2017, Trump was already present in the Nice carnival. His effigy sat on barrels of oil, meant to symbolise the power of lobbyists and money - a float built while he was still a candidate.
Carefully constructing these bigger-than-life papier-mache figures, the workshop hopes to inject some discussion around the carnival, in its use of political satire.
Around Nice, Trump has been criticised for being rude and rough, and therefore deserving to be mocked and caricatured.
