- Story Text: Hundreds of Filipino evacuees fleeing an active volcano in central Philippines on Friday (January 26) received medical assistance from the health ministry and military.
Health workers gave free check ups and medicine to elderly women and children as evacuation centre begin to fill up.
The state disaster agency estimates at least 75,500 people have fled towns surrounding the volcano, most of whom are currently staying at schools converted into evacuation centers. The health ministry said toilet facilities for displaced residents have not kept up with the influx of evacuees at evacuation centers, but said it is rushing to address the issue.
Mount Mayon's alert remains just one notch below the highest level of 5 since being raised from level 3 on Tuesday (January 23). The provincial government has expanded the no-go area around the 2,462-metre (8,077-feet) Mayon to a radius of 9 kilometres. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
