The head of the Chancellery of the Russian Imperial House said on Friday (September 9) that Russia's Romanov dynasty, which has blood ties to Queen Elizabeth II, was mourning the death of the late British monarch, who died on Thursday.
"Queen Elizabeth II will surely go down in world history as a very wise person, who preserved the traditional monarchy in Great Britain in very difficult conditions of a rapidly-changing world," Zakatov told Reuters via video link from outside Moscow.
Zakatov explained that Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, head of Russia's House of Romanov, was the Queen's third cousin, and were both great-granddaughters of Britain's Queen Victoria.
Zakatov also said that the Grand Duchess had kept in touch with the late Queen till the very last years of her life.
The Romanov dynasty ruled Russia for over 300 years before Nicholas II abdicated in early 1917, setting the country on course for the Bolshevik Revolution in November of that year, civil war, and 70 years of Communist rule. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
