A Yemeni student who was evacuated from Sudan, Zubair al-Yakari, appeals for the evacuation of other students stranded in Port Sudan.
Al-Yakari, who was among dozens of Yemeni nationals evacuated by a Saudi navy ship from Port Sudan to Jeddah, says his colleagues and thousands of other Yemenis are living in difficult circumstances as they wait for their evacuation.
“There is no food, drinking water, means of communication, internet, or anything. They are severely suffering. We hope that they are evacuated as soon as possible,†he said.
Yemenis stranded in Sudan are mostly students at Sudanese universities and their families.
They feel they have been left to fend for themselves by both the internationally recognized government in Aden and the Houthi-led government in Sanaa.
Belal, one of those students stranded in Port Sudan, was seen in a video obtained by Reuters, talking on their behalf.
“They (Yemeni officials) disregard our suffering and the suffering of families and children in halls, mosques and streets. We appeal to officials and concerned authorities to consider our situation during such exceptional circumstances and to evacuate us,†he said addressing a crowd of Yemenis.
Fighting could be heard in south Khartoum on Sunday (May 7) as envoys from Sudan's warring parties were in Saudi Arabia for talks that international mediators hope will bring an end to a three-week old conflict that has killed hundreds and triggered an exodus.
Battles since mid-April between the country's armed forces and the Rapid Support forces
have killed hundreds of people and wounded thousands of others in Sudan. They also disrupted aid supplies and sent 100,000 refugees fleeing abroad.
