- Story Text: Actresses and a sumo wrestler have shown off 2,000
carats of diamonds at Japan's National Science Museum.
Who said diamonds are a girl's best friend?
At this show held in Tokyo on Monday (October 2) male
models and a sumo wrestler, along with Japanese actresses,
wore a total 2,000 carats of diamonds and sashayed down a
catwalk set up against a backdrop of dinosaurs.
The diamond show, held at the National Science Museum,
featured award winning jewellery of this year's De Beers
Diamond International Awards, dubbed the "Oscar Awards" of the
jewellery industry.
Twenty-nine necklaces, bracelets, earrings and even
masks encrusted with scintillating diamonds were displayed at
the show by models both young and old.
The models were dressed in street fashion, chains and
other accessories made by Chrome Hearts, a Los Angeles-based
brand which specialises in handmade leather clothes.
Hawaii-born sumo wrestler Musashimaru, however, wore a
pink kimono and a large earring with 86 diamonds embedded in
it.
"The catwalk? It was kinda nervous walking out there,
nervous," he said after being asked after the show what it
felt like to be a model.
The award winning jewellery was designed by designers
from 16 different countries, including Japan, which enjoys the
highest number of winning entries.
David Endicott, marketing director of De Beers, Japan
said he hoped that by seeing the show and the diverse use of
the jewellery, people would be encouraged to wear diamonds
more often.
"Japanese people particularly watch a lot of western
trends in fashions and so on and the fashion house we have
here is from Los Angeles," said Endicott. "We thought it would
be very contemporary, very modern, that is what diamonds are
all about and more and more young people are buying diamonds
because of it, because they can wear it with funky fashions,
if you like, as well as evening wear and as well as in the
office. It is that kind of feeling we wanted to get across,"
he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
