- Story Text: Twenty-six foreign nations show their wares at the Osaka (Japan) Trade Fair - considered the largest of its kind in the Far East - opened Apr. 12. Officials expect the Fair attendance to total 200,000 by closing day Apr. 26.
US Ambassador Douglas MacArthur opened the 350,000 dollar American Pavilion, whose main building was brought to Osaka from the Tokyo 1959 Trade Fair. West Germany, Czechoslovakia, South Vietnam, Brazil and Australia also have their own pavilions.
Other Government-sponsored exhibits are from Britain, France, Italy, Sweden and Nationalist China. Czechoslovakia, with a showing of huge specialized lathes and delicate glass stemware, and East Germany are the only communist countries to take part. The Soviet Union put on a spectacular display at the last Osaka fair in 1958 centering around its sputniks, but was absent this time.
Contracts concluded on the first day totalled GBP47,970,000 (GBP47,970) compared to GBP35,000,000 in 1958, trade fair officials said, Machinery was the star of the show, with 74 per cent of the booths occupied by machines of all sorts.
