- Story Text: Hundreds of Italians have gathered at Rome's town hall
to pay their last respects to one of Italy's most beloved
actors, Vittorio Gassman.
Gassman, known for his professional versatility and
tall good looks, died on Thursday (June 29) of a heart attack
in his home in Rome at the age of 77.
His coffin, surrounded by flowers, lay in state at Rome's
town hall, Campidoglio, on Friday (June 30) for relatives and
members of the public to say their last farewell.
People of all ages waiting to enter the town hall expressed
their sadness over the loss of such a great actor and man.
"I'm here to pay homage to this great man, not for his
acting skills but for the type of person he was," said Sister
Maria Pina Annunziata.
"To know that there is no longer Gassman is really terrible,
I certainly didn't know him personally, but just knowing he is
no longer here is hard," said Arianna Giuliano.
"I've been crying since yesterday," said an emotional
Luigi Cavaterra.
In one of his most notable roles, Gassman played a reckless
playboy in Dino Risis Il Sorpasso. The role has since become
an emblem of the "dolce vita" ("sweet life").
Instantly recognised in his homeland, Gassman also attempted
to break into Hollywood. In 1996 he played a cameo role in
Sleepers, starring Robert De Niro.
Three times married - once to the American actress Shelley
Winters - Gassman's masterful stage presence made him the
Laurence Olivier of Italy - and earned him his nickname Il
Mattatore - the star.
Gassman, who was born in the north-west city of Genoa on
September 1, 1922, had two daughters and two sons, including
the actor Alessandro Gassman.
