Summary:August 28 1963: the great upsurge of protest in the cause of American civil rights brought almost a quarter of a million people from all parts of the USA to an enormous rally in Washington DC. The leader of the march was the veteran Philip Randolph, but men like Dr Martin Luther King were with him when he met President John F Kennedy to press their claim for equal rights for America's people.
