- Title: USA: Civil Rights March
- Date: 28th August 1963
- Summary: On August 28th, people from all parts of the United States converged on the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. 200,000 of them, in the biggest peaceful demonstration for civil rights ever seen in America. It was the climax of this year's campaign by the African Americans in their historic struggle for equal rights with whites. On the same day four African American schoolgirls were killed and 20 other people injured when a bomb exploded in the middle of a service at a church in Alabama. Violence - especially from white extremists - is never far below the surface in the Southern States. But in Washington African Americans gave notice that they were getting impatient in their repeated demands for civil rights. Although the day was peaceful, it carried forebodings of the tense struggle ahead in this, the biggest internal issue the United States has ever had to face. In August it was one of the biggest problems facing President Kennedy.
