- Story Text:German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier was in Mexico on Monday (June 06) to help celebrate a series of cultural activists and programmes throughout the year to deepen an understanding and ties between the two nations.
Under the theme "Alliance For The Future", the "Year of Germany in Mexico" was inaugurated in the Mexican capital. More than 100 projects across more than a dozen Mexican cities will host events.
According to the Germany Foreign Ministry, the initiative aims to strengthen cultural, education and economic ties with Latin America's no. 2 economy.
Speaking in Mexico City, Steinmeier said he wants a greater understanding between Mexico and Germany.
"In the 'Year of Germany in Mexico' we want to present a complete picture of our country, to give a panorama of our country. But I don't think this is enough for me, nor for you all, nor for Mr (Klaus-Dieter) Lehman (President of the Goethe Institute). What we want is a debate beyond perceptions, the way things are seen and to really explore our relations in the future," he said.
On the agenda is an exhibition in Mexico on expressionist painter Otto Dix and educational exchanges between the Free University of Berlin and ten Mexican universities to help develop self-driving cars.
"'Everything is interaction,' that is the motto of a joint efforts and the principles of early 19th century Europe should not be forgotten, very little was known of this (Mexico) region in the world and so it was an almost revolutionary motto. This dual year wants to echo this theme of friendly exchange, tolerance, a reflection of diversity and that there be an eternal awakening of curiosity and interest in each other," added Steinmeier.
In Germany, the Gropius Bau Museum in Berlin will hold an exhibition called "The Beautiful Language of the Maya" and German automakers will seek ways to develop further cooperation with Mexico's automobile sector. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
