- Story Text:North Korea's leader-in-waiting Kim Jong-il made a rare public appearance at a military parade on Tuesday (October 10) to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the communist state's ruling party.
Kim Jong-il, son of deceased leader Kim Il-sung, watched the huge parade unravel at Kim Il-sung square, in the heart of the capital Pyongyang, where thousands of people rallied for the day's celebrations.
Tens of thousands of soldiers cheered when red balloons were released and fireworks thundered above the square.
Kim, 53, who is supreme commander of North Korea's 1.1-million-strong military, has yet to be formally confirmed in the two key posts his father held -- general secretary of the ruling Workers' Party and state president.
Late President Kim Il-sung groomed his eldest son for 20 years as his successor. Kim Jong-il has already taken over much of the day-to-day running of the isolated state in recent years.
Russia's Itar-Tass news agency said on Monday that Kim Jong-il was poised to assume the post of communist party chief on the party's fiftieth anniversary.
Citing informed sources close to the North Korean Embassy in Beijing, Tass said Kim would be officially declared party general secretary on Tuesday.
But political observers say the political, economic and diplomatic situation in North Korea is not conducive to naming Kim party general secretary.
Kim Il-sung had promised his people that the two Koreas would be united by the time of the fiftieth anniversary. Yet the two countries are far from forming any political alliance.
North Korea also suffered heavy damages from floods in July and August, and Seoul officials said the disaster might prompt the North to delay the succession.
Newly appointed Defence Minister Choe Kwang delivered a speech to the congregated millions during the ceremonies.
