- Story Text: World Vision, a non-governmental advocacy and development organization, has made the participating leaders of the ongoing Group of Seven Industrialised Nations (G7) summit into cardboard cutouts of superheroes, hoping to encourage the annual meeting to produce positive results.
The cutouts were displayed at an exhibition site next to the main press centre on Thursday (May 26).
The national director of World Vision Japan, Nobuhiko Katayama, said he hoped the leaders would step up and "bring change to the world, and truly become heroes".
"Many say that the influence of the G7 and G8 leaders and their countries have weakened, but I feel that they still hold a lot of power in their hands," he said.
The cardboard version of each leader is clad in a colourful superhero suit, matching their respective national flags, with the letters "UHC" - standing for Universal Health Care - printed across the chest.
"Though our problems are focused on the world economy and world politics, we must not forget, for example, the individual children and women in this world suffering from poverty," Katayama added. "I have high hopes that (the G7 leaders), with these people in mind, will ambitiously come up with strong policies (during this summit) that will change the world."
During the summit, leaders are expected to address global challenges including the global economic slowdown, refugee crisis, and combatting terrorism. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
