- Story Text: Egypt's civil aviation minister and the French ambassador to Cairo joined hundreds of Egyptians on Thursday (May 26) at a vigil held for the victims of an EgyptAir flight which crashed in the Mediterranean last week.
Friends, family members, and colleagues of passengers on board, gathered in front of Cairo's opera house to deliver a message of sympathy and solidarity.
Crowds gathered in front of a stage where a banner with the number 66 - signifying the number of victims - was hanging. Many people held flowers, candles and the Egyptian flags, some were seen whispering silent prayers.
"We express our sympathy with the victims, with the families and with EgyptAir staff members. I think it's important to be here, it's a very good initiative to organize this event. I think it was necessary for all those who have lost someone, a friend or a beloved one in the crash to have a moment to share their sorrow and to receive a message of sympathy and compassion. So this is a sense of my presence here tonight," said the French Ambassador to Egypt Andre Parant.
