- Story Text:Japan's prime minister offered prayers at an ancient shrine on Wednesday (May 25), the eve of the Ise-Shima Group of Seven (G7) summit.
Shinzo Abe visited the 2000-year-old Ise Grand Shrine, a spiritual homeland for many Japanese people, and greeted locals and visitors standing nearby.
The trip comes as U.S. President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and leaders from Italy, France and Canada are due to arrive in the area.
An estimated 15,000 police have been called in from around Japan to beef up security ahead of the leaders' arrival.
Police have set up road blocks and check points along many of the routes leading to the hotels where the summit is to take place.
The summit kicks off on Thursday (May 26), where the leaders of the G7 nations will discuss topics related to issues ranging from the refugee crisis to the global economic slowdown. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
